Northborough - Born in 1825 in Worcester, Mass., young Daniel Wesson had an interest in all things mechanical. A family letter dated 1842, when Daniel was 17, mentions that although he enjoyed hunting, he would “rather be at work in the shop on gunlocks, springs or something of the kind.” Soon afterward he was apprenticed to his brother Edwin to learn the trade of gun making. Edwin had his shop in Northborough and was a very well-known maker of target rifles.

Time is ticking for White Cliffs

Northborough – After the LaCava family, which owns White Cliffs, decided to sell the iconic building last winter, residents and other fans of the historic property have been up in arms about will happen to it next.

Voters agree to pass over motion to establish White Cliffs as historic district

Northborough – The voters at the Annual Town Meeting (ATM) April 29 passed a motion to “move” an article that would establish White Cliffs as a historic district. This was done at the request of the Historic District Commission who said the property’s owners and the town have agreed to extend the demolition delay bylaw until Dec. 31, 2015. Until the ATM, the delay was due to run out this June, which would have given the owners, the LaCava family, the right to demolish the building. However, if the original article had passed at the ATM, and the property was established as a historic district, neither the current owners or any future owners would have been allowed to change the street view of the property.

Commission votes to establish White Cliffs as historic district

Northborough – In spite of strenuous opposition voiced by the current owner’s attorney, the Northborough Historic District Commission unanimously voted April 21 to approve the White Cliffs property as a historic district. The decision must ultimately be approved by voters at next week’s Town Meeting.

Public hearing to be held regarding establishing White Cliffs as historic district

Northborough – The Northborough Historic District Commission will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, April 21 at 7 p.m. on the proposed White Cliffs Historic District. The meeting will be held in the Northborough Fire Department meeting room, 11 Pierce St.

Updated – Demolition delay extended for White Cliffs

Northborough – By a unanimous vote Feb. 12, the Northborough Historical Commission passed a measure to extend the demolition delay ruling for the White Cliffs property to the full 180 days. That decision was made during a public hearing held in front of nearly 50 residents and town officials who gathered at the Robert E. Melican Middle School. But if the property is to be ultimately saved, there is still much work to be done, Normand Corbin, the commission’s acting chair, stressed.

Northborough – The Northborough Historical Commission will hold a public hearing regarding the demolition permit for White Cliffs, 187 Main St., Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7:15 p.m. at the Robert E. Melican Middle School Teaching Center, 1st Floor, 145 Lincoln St.

Officials, residents hope buyer will step forward to save White Cliffs

Northborough – Now that the news has broken that the owners of the White Cliffs estate have applied for a demolition permit, residents and those who have enjoyed attending functions there have taken to social media to express their dismay. Joining them in expressing frustration is the Historical Commission who has been trying, Normand Corbin, the commission’s chair, said to try to find a way to prevent the historic manse from coming down.

Northborough – After 10 months on the market, there are no buyers in sight for the historic White Cliffs estate. As a result, the owners of the 6.5-acre plus property applied for a demolition permit tonight at the Historical Commission meeting. According to Michael Durkin, a Realtor with LAER Realty Partners, who is representing the current owners, the LaCava family, the decision was not an easy one to make.
