Locals report news on area students

Region – Merrimack College recently announced its 2011 Presidential Scholar Award recipients at an Honors Convocation held at the school. The Presidential Scholar designation is awarded to those graduating students who have achieved a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, based on a 4.0 grading system. Hudson's Jamie Millett, a psychology and criminology major, is one of the recipients.

 

Marybeth Mulligan of Hudson, a rising senior at Assumption College in Worcester, has been named to the 2011 Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program. One of 30 students in the nation selected for this honor, Mulligan will participate in a one-week intensive history program in New York City in June.
The Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program identifies and supports the top undergraduate majors in American history across the country. One-Week Scholars visit museums and historical sites in New York City and meet with distinguished historians, writers, editors, museum curators and other professionals to participate in discussions about major issues in American history and careers in the field.

 

Shrewsbury native Hannah Rosen will be one of 49 students from Stonehill College working with faculty members at the college this summer on research projects through the Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program. The SURE Program provides students with an opportunity to perform significant, publishable research under the guidance of an experienced faculty researcher.

Rosen will work with Assistant Professor of Anthropology Erica Tucker on a project titled “La Famille Étrangère: Cultural Constructions of Frenchmess and the Home Stay Experience.”

The research project is an anthropological study on the home-stay experience conducted with host families and students studying abroad in Grenoble, France. An ethnography will be written that examines how the host family adapts their lifestyle and routine behaviors, and orients themselves around an extended foreign presence in the home – both foreign in the sense that the student is not a member of the family, and also foreign in that the student is literally from a foreign country.

Rosen, an English and French double major, is already collecting data via participant observation and interviews as she is studying abroad in France this semester.

 

Andreanna Stech, daughter of Marcia and Paul Stech of Shrewsbury, who attends Worcester State University, has been inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, the nation's oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students who have earned a 3.5 GPA or higher.

 

Karen Roth of Southborough, a member of the class of 2014 at Washington and Lee University, has earned dean's list status for the recently ended winter term.

Dean's list status at Washington and Lee represents a term grade-average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

 

The following area residents received degrees during Quinnipiac University's 80th Undergraduate Commencement Exercises May 22: James W. Spicer of Southborough, Bachelor of Science in biology; Rebecca L. Joseph of Shrewsbury, Bachelor of Science in finance; and Maria L. Lanzillotti of Shrewsbury, Bachelor of Arts in communications.

 

John Colbert Lucey, a recent graduate at Hampden-Sydney College, was named to the dean's list for the spring semester of the 2010-2011 academic year. To earn this distinction, students must achieve at least a 3.3 semester grade point average out of a possible 4.0.

Colbert is a graduate of St. Mark's School in Southborough.

 

Ithaca College student Gregory Lewinter, a resident of Westborough, received the Professional Excellence Award – Sport Management in May. Given annually by the college's School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, the honor recognizes exemplary academic achievement and professional accomplishment by a graduating senior. A Sport Management major, Lewinter graduated from Ithaca College in May.

 

The following local residents graduated from Saint Michael's College, May 16, in ceremonies held on the campus of the liberal arts residential Catholic college located in the Burlington area of Vermont: Miranda Christine Jonswold, daughter of Gilbert and Rochelle Jonswold of Shrewsbury, earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and mass communication; Marybeth Beardsley Ash, daughter of Anthony and Susan Ash of Westborough, earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in Economics; Jacqueline Bridget McHugh, daughter of Ronald and M. Carolyn McHugh of Southborough, earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology; and Kerrie Leigh Weir, daughter of Kevin and Laurie Weir of Southborough, earned a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in business administration and art.

 

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth undergraduate commencement was May 22. 1,589 graduates received degrees. UMass System President Jack Wilson delivered the commencement address.

Katherine Berkland of Southborough, a child and family studies major at Syracuse University's College of Human Ecology, received the Outstanding Sophomore Award from the school, presented at the end of the academic year.

 

Keene State College has released the dean's list for the spring semester 2011. Among the 1,450 students named to the dean's list are: From Southborough – Jaclyn Conant Tortorella. From Shrewsbury – Jeffrey Robert Comeau; Brittany Karin Kunkel; and Lauren Domenica Stickel. From Westborough – Alex Christopher Eisenbeis; Garrett Matthew Kirker; and Emily Elizabeth Madson.

The dean's list designation is bestowed to those Keene State College undergraduates enrolled in a degree program who have completed a minimum of six credit hours in the semester, receiving no failing or incomplete grades. A 3.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale is required to earn the Dean's List honor.

 

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) has welcomed Jennifer M. Crosier of Shrewsbury as a new member. Crosier just completed her sophomore year at Providence College majoring in secondary education and history. NSCS is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is the nation's only interdisciplinary honors organization for first- and second-year college students. Membership is by invitation only, based on grade point average and class standing. Crosier will be honored during an Induction Convocation this fall on the campus of Providence College.

 

Kristina Hurley Benoit from Shrewsbury has graduated from Babson College magna cum laude.

Benoit is a Presidential Scholar and Women's Leadership Honoree. She received multiple academic and athletic awards each semester of her matriculation and was named to the Babson College dean's list all eight semesters and to the NEWMAC All-Academic squad eight times.

Benoit was a three-sport athlete. She was a member of the Beavers” soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams. Her teams won six league championships and six NCAA tournaments, including advancement to Sweet Sixteen and elite eight appearances.

Benoit will be working at the Royal Bank of Scotland as a global banking and markets analyst. She is the daughter of Annemarie Hurley and granddaughter of James Hurley of Shrewsbury.

 

Margaret L. Doolin, daughter of Bonnie and John Doolin of Marlborough, has been named to the dean's list at Hamilton College for the 2011 spring semester.
To be placed on the dean's list, a student must achieve a grade point average of 90 or above during the term.
Doolin, a rising sophomore, is a graduate of Marlborough Public Schools.
