Westborough – A little snow did not stop Girl Scouts” Fiona Boyd and Molly Richards of Troop 30511 from selling cookies Jan. 21. Despite the uncooperative weather, the girls set up a makeshift drive-through in the parking lot across from the Tufts Machine lot. Patrons merely had to drive up to the Scouts” table and, from the comfort of their warm cars, purchase cookies.
“We don's mind the snow,” Fiona said, who was dressed as a thin mint, “it is kind of fun, actually!”
New to the cookie collection this year is Savannah Smiles, named in honor of the birthplace of Scouting. Savannah Smiles are lemon wedges dusted with confectioner's sugar – a spin on the Lemon Coolers flavor that was retired by the Scouts in 2005. Other cookie flavors include Thin Mints, Samoas, Dulce de Leche, Tagalongs, Trefoiols, Do Si Dos and Thank U Berry Munch. All cookies sell for $4 a box.
The annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale kicked off Jan. 20 and will run through Sunday, March 4. New this year, the girls will have cookies for immediate delivery; no more ordering and waiting. All 27 troops will hold booth sales on the weekends at the following locations: Lowes and Stop & Shop (on Lyman St.) on Fridays; Stop & Shop (on Turnpike Road and Lyman St.), Roche Brothers, EL Harvey and Sons, Lowes, Sovereign Bank and Central One Federal Credit Union on Saturdays. Friday sales will run from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday sales will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. These are cash and carry sales. Also, there is a “cookie locator” app to find the nearest cookie-sale location in Westborough.
Many of the troops are planning trips and community service projects funded by their cookie sale profits. According to the Girl Scout website, “Every cookie has a mission: to help girls do great things.”
Westborough Girl Scouts recently received a plaque and recognition for their Gifts of Caring from their last cookie sale. The plaque, presented by Ed Donnelly of the Westborough VFW, was from Able Company, 2/503rd Airborne Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade and is on display at the Westborough library throughout the cookie sale.
