Today is Thursday, May 3, the 124th day of 2012.
The term “Machiavellian,” which has come to mean a ruthless action in which the end justifies the means, no matter how immoral, is well-known. But did you know it was actually coined for a man who was born on this day in 1469, the Italian philosopher and writer Niccolo Machiavelli? In his book, “The Prince” he argues that in order to achieve the pinnacle of success, one must do whatever it takes, no matter who or what gets in the way.
On this day in 1986, the legendary jockey Willie Shoemaker, 54 at the time, became the oldest man to win the Kentucky Derby.
And a sad anniversary today – in 2007 three-year-old Madeleine McCann of Rothley, England, disappeared while on a family vacation in Portugal. Despite a massive, prolonged international search, no traces of the little girl have ever been found.
A number of notable musicians were born on this day in history. They include – Bing Crosby (1903), James Brown (1933), Frankie Valli (1934); Christopher Cross (1951) and Pete Seeger (1919).
Here are six tips for the day –
