Region –Today is Tuesday, May 15, the 136th day of 2012.
On this day in history in 1942, a bill was passed establishing the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAACs), which granted women official military status.
On this day in 1972, George Wallace, the governor of Alabama, who was in the midst of a presidential campaign, was shot by Arthur Bremer. The next day, while Wallace fought for his life, he was announced as the winner of the Michigan and Maryland primaries.
Wallace is probably best known for his firm pro-segregation policies which helped add fuel to the racial tensions in the Southern U.S. during the 1960s.
On this day in 1988, after eight years of occupation, the Soviet Union began to move troops out of Afghanistan.
Today's birthdays include – Madeleine Albright (1937), the former secretary of state, football player Emmitt Smith (1969) and artist Jasper Johns (1981).
1. A long and sometimes contentious debate will be answered today as Westborough's voters go to the polls to decide if they should approve a debt exclusion of $11 million for a new Fire Station.
2. Incumbents Jeff Amberson and William Pantazis won their bids for re-election for the Northborough Board of Selectmen yesterday.
3. Another incumbent, Bill Boland won his bid for a third term on the Southborough Board of Selectmen.
