Southborough – Winifred (Hemenway) Ledger, 92, of Southborough and formerly a longtime resident of Sudbury, passed away after a long illness Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Hearthstone Assisted Living in Marlborough. She was the beloved wife of Phil Ledger, whom she married in 1941.
Born in Leominster, she was the daughter of the late Alan and Bessie Jane Hemenway.? She was a graduate of the New England School of Art, and, during WWII and after, she worked as an associate at the advertising agency of Sutherland/Abbot, and later as a fashion artist at Jordan Marsh, Filene's, The Harvard Coop, Marshall's, and other large retailers. She continued to work in freelance advertising from Cape Cod to Boston until she was 75.
Win was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and was always very involved in any community in which she lived. She was a long time Girl Scout leader for each of her four daughters, and was a substitute teacher at Lincoln-Sudbury-Reg. H.S.; she was a charter member of the Sudbury League of Women Voters; Co-Chair of the Sudbury Cancer Drive; a member of the Thursday Garden Club; and the chair of fashion shows for St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, Sudbury Women's Club, and the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln.? As the chairman of the Sudbury Permanent Landscape Committee, she was responsible for all landscaping of town buildings, schools, and park, including the design, donations for, and planting direction of Heritage Park in Sudbury Centre.
In Duxbury and Cotuit, she was President of the Friends of the Library, and was involved in their Garden Clubs.? She presided over the Osterville Garden Club and continued to be an active Garden Club member when she settled in Southborough. Win participated in many art shows, and especially enjoyed displaying her prize-winning, innovative flower arrangements at flower shows and at “Art-in-Bloom” competitions from Tower Hill to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
She leaves behind her sister, Joyce Brown of Kittery Point, Maine, and her brother, Russell D. Hemenway of New York City, and their children? She also leaves four loving daughters, Valentine Judge of Chicago; Phoebe H. Legere of New York City; Jane L. Jackson and her husband, Mike, of Southborough; and Alison L Fraser and her husband, Robert, of Marlborough, as well as her nine grandchildren, Vanessa Hebron, Phoebe V. Judge, Chloe Judge, Quentin M. Judge and wife Cayce Harrison, Nathaniel M. Jackson, Samuel P. Jackson, Abigail V. Jackson, Amy W. Fraser, and Reed A Fraser, and a great-granddaughter, Madeline Hebron. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard Hemenway.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m., at St. Mark's Church, 27 Main St., Southborough.? Burial will be private. Morris Funeral Home of Southborough is assisting with arrangements.
