Region – Today is Wednesday, Aug. 22, the 235th day of 2012.
On this day in 2007, the Texas Rangers didn's just beat the Baltimore Orioles in MLB action; they completely crushed them, 30-3.
On this day in 1992, the deadly category 4 storm, Hurricane Andrew, hit the Bahamas before moving onto Florida. ?By the time the storm weakened two days later, 26 people had died and property ?damage was estimated at 35 billion dollars.
And on this day in 1864 the Geneva Convention was adopted by 12 countries after Swiss humanitarian Jean-Henri Dunant called for nonpartisan, compassionate care for all soldiers during times of war. As a result, the Red Cross was also formed and Dunant was awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
Born on this day – Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski (1939); television star/chef Giada de Laurentiis (1970) and the late science fiction novelist Ray Bradbury (1920).
