Region – Today is Wednesday, Sept. 12, the 256th day of 2012.
On this day in 1953, it wasn's quite a royal wedding but rather a glamorous American one when Sen. John Fitzgerald Kennedy of Massachusetts married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier in Newport, RI. 750 guests filled St. Mary's Church while another 3,000 waited outside, hoping to catch a glimpse of the couple.
On this day in 1974, a shameful period started in Boston's history when attempts to enforce court-ordered school busing turned violent. Under the order of U.S. District Judge Arthur Garrity, African American students were bused to predominantly white schools and white students to black schools. Police in riot gear attempted to protect school buses carrying African American children that were being pelted with eggs, bricks, and bottles by angry white protestors.
And on this day in 2001, the skies over America were silent as the U.S. government halted all air traffic after the terrorist attacks via highjacked planes on New York City, Washington, D.C and Pennsylvania the day before. Hundreds of flights were grounded as officials sought to protect the country from more acts of terrorism.
Today's birthdays include – the late Barry White (1944); Jennifer Hudson (1981) and George Jones (1931).
