Northborough – The Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks football team defeated the Worcester North Polar Bears 22-16 in a game played Oct. 24. With the victory, the Tomahawks will advance to the playoffs for the first time since 1987.
The Tomahawks scored first on a 74-yard pass play from Ryan Barry to Colin Robinson in the first quarter. The Polar Bears scored moments later on a 100-yard kickoff return by Madison Greene and had built a 16-7 lead by halftime.
The key turning point of the game came in the third quarter, when the ball was snapped over the head of North’s punter, Jonathan Rivera, giving the Tomahawks possession on the Polar Bears’ 33-yard line. Two plays later, Thomas Polutchko scored on a 20-yard touchdown run, bringing the score to 16-14.
With 2:11 remaining in the game, quarterback Ryan Barry took the ball down the sideline himself with a 55-yard run that put the Tomahawks ahead 22-16. The Tomahawks defense held the Polar Bears on their next drive, ensuring the victory.
