Shrewsbury – Dorothy P. Alvord, of Shrewsbury, died Saturday, March 14, 2015 at her home. She was 87.
Dorothy was born Feb. 6, 1928 in Worcester, daughter of the late James E. and Agnes I. (Breen) Foley. She was raised in the family home on Estabrook Road in Shrewsbury, along with her brother, Donald James Foley, late of Petaluma, Calif., and Mary (Mack), late of Bridgewater.
Dorothy met the love of her life, James “Jim” Alvord, while working at Woodbury and Company. The two were married in 1950 and remained happily married until James passed away in August 2012.
After marriage, Dorothy spent several years at home raising the couple’s two children. She also became involved in several social groups, making friendships that would last throughout the rest of her life. She later returned to the workplace, first at Kings department store and then CVS, both in Shrewsbury.
Dorothy enjoyed reading, gardening, entertaining guests, and even occasional trips to Atlantic City with Jim.
She leaves a daughter, Patricia A. Dzaugis and her husband Lawrence of Villa Ridge, Mo.; a son, J. Clinton Alvord Jr. and his wife Bonnie Kenderdine of Framingham; and three grandchildren, Alyissa (Dzaugis) Bova of Somerville, Chelsea Dzaugis of Villa Ridge, Mo., and Nathan Kendrick Clinton Alvord of Framingham. She is also survived by close family friend and “daughter-in-love,” Linda Swift of Shrewsbury.
Funeral services will be private.
