Obit-Flag_USE-THIS-ONE4Marlborough – William J. “Bill” Sontag Jr., 63, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015. He was the husband of Patricia “Patty” (Kelley) Sontag, to whom he was married for 25 years.

He was born in Hackensack,N.J., the son of the late William Sr. and Johanna (Tagliabue) Sontag, and moved to Marlborough in 1986. He was a graduate of Bergen Catholic High School and Manhattan College, where he was in the ROTC program. After college he was commissioned in the United State Air Force. He served 20 years in the Air Force and Air Force Reserves, retiring with the rank of Major.

Bill worked as a Contracts Manager for many companies, including Sperry Systems in New York, Virginia, and Montreal; the Goodrich Corporation in Chelmsford; Tetratech in Framingham; and the Raytheon Corp. in Marlborough.

He was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Marlborough Knights of Columbus Council #81, the AMVETS Post 1980 in Marlborough, the Air Force Association and the National Contract Management Association. He was also a longtime leader of Cub Scout Pack 31 and Boy Scout Troop 31 in Marlborough.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, William Sontag III of Marlborough; two brothers, Thomas Sontag of Bogota, N.J. and James Sontag of New Hope, Penn.; and one sister, Margaret Sontag of Virginia Beach, Va.

His funeral will be held Monday, Aug. 31, at 9 a.m., in the Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St. Burial will follow in Holy Hood Cemetery in Brookline. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, Aug. 30, from 5-8 p.m., in the William R. Short and Son Funeral Home (www.shortfuneral.com), 95 West Main St., Marlborough.
