Gilbert A. PartchMarlborough – Gilbert Alan Partch passed away Friday, August 21, 2020 at his home of 48 years in Marlborough. He was born September 1, 1936 on the family farm in Bristol, Vermont, son of Harold and Myrla Benton Partch.

Gil attended elementary and high school in Bristol. He studied Science and Biology at Middlebury College, receiving his undergraduate degree there and later went on to receive a Masters degree. He was a soccer star at Middlebury, their team being undefeated in 1954. Gil was also a member of the Chi Psi fraternity.

Gil enlisted in the Army in 1959 and served as a Nuclear Weapons Maintenance Specialist until June of 1962.

He began his teaching career on Fishers Island, New York. There he taught high school Science and Biology. ‘Mr. Partch’ was a well-respected, beloved, and favorite teacher to many of his students. He taught as he lived his life, with a gentle, kind, and loving spirit. He coached basketball and chaperoned many school outings and field trips. Gil taught adult education classes as well. Woodworking, ceramics, pottery, and art were just a few. His talents and skills were many.

Gil was predeceased by his beloved wife of 44 years, Peggy who passed in 2017. They enjoyed traveling together to visit family and explore the back roads and byways. They often would stop at a country inn for lunch or dinner. They enjoyed walking and would do so at any beautiful park they would encounter. Gil spent his later years after retiring from Brandeis University in his gardens which he loved. As a Vermont farm boy, he had a love of nature. He shared many of his gardening tips with his children and passed time with his grandchildren and family. He was always a quiet, strong, loving presence in his family. He was a great teacher in all aspects and ready to engage in stimulating conversation at any time or give advice when needed.

He leaves two sisters, Ann (Darrell) Dykes and Janice (Dick) Brigham. He lost his brother Norman in 2016. He leaves behind children, Laura (John) Finan, Gregory (Dawn), Douglas, Jeffrey, Patricia (Glen) Norton, Margaret (Glenn) Everett, Pamela (Mark) Chatham and George “Chip” (Carolyn) Griffin. Gil was “Papa”, grandfather to Samantha, Abigail, Christopher John (C.J.), Gregory, Kristen, Kimberly, Crystal, Amy, David, Andrew, Taylor, Sarah, Christopher, Matthew, Timothy, Daniel, Patrick, Aidan and Emrys. He was great grandfather to Casey, Lukas, Griffin, Isabella, Angelia, Carla, Ali and Ethan, and left several nieces and nephews.

Private family services will be held at a future date.

Donations may be made in Gil’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s hospital.
