Phillip M. SmithBridgewater – It is with our family’s great sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved Philip, who was tragically killed by a drunk driver on his way to work in the early hours of Monday morning December 6th.

Philip was born in Ohio and grew up in North Dakota and Massachusetts. As a child his summers were spent with his family at his grandparents’ home on Lake Melissa, Minnesota.

Philip attended Westborough High school and Hyde School in Bath Maine, graduating with high honors. He was an incredible athlete achieving state championships in football, wrestling, track and field. Because of his many accomplishments at Hyde School he was recognized on the Today show.

He was an alumnus of the University of Utah. He left the University to attend the highly acclaimed Martha Graham School of Dance in New York City where he excelled in doing what he loved. He then joined the Lynn Dance Company in Wisconsin where he continued his love for dance and movement. When his dance career ended due to injury, he returned to Massachusetts where he found his calling in the medical field. He was highly respected for his compassion and dedication where he worked as manager of the Echo Lab for Bio Care Diagnostic at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston and Needham.

Philip had a great love for all creatures great and small, caring deeply for his many cats who he rescued over the years. He always spoke from his heart.

He was a thoughtful and compassionate listener and a gifted poet, artist, and woodworker. Philip was sincere, kind, intentional and passionate. His sense of humor and laugh was infectious. He was deeply loved by his family and will be forever missed.

He leaves behind his precious mother Sarah Loomis Moran of Duxbury, MA; his brother James Smith, wife Nitza, children, Austin, Kenneth, and Alexander; his treasured sister Melissa Faith Smith Orlando, husband William, sons Thomas and Kenneth; daughter Virginia, partner Kristian Solfiell and their son Henry Solfiell; his brother John Smith, wife Kelly, children Gabriel and Nicholas; his brother Nathan Smith, wife Victoria, children Zachary, Emilia and Isabelle; his cousin Mark Michaelson, wife Molli, daughter Chloe; his Uncle Dr. John Moran, wife Gretchen and several cousins; and his Aunt Susan Fieldsmith, daughter Mariah Peebles. Philip was predeceased by his father, The Reverend Dr. Sidney Smith; his stepfather John Alden Ellis, his loving grandparents Virginia and Kenneth Moran.

In loving memory of Philip we include the words of John Lennon:

“Sounds of laughter, shades of life are ringing through my open ears inciting and inviting me.  Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns. It calls me on and on across the universe”

Philip’s celebration of life will be held on Sunday December 12th from 1 – 4 pm at his Mother’s home at 225 Evergreen Street Duxbury Massachusetts.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Philip’s name to the Paws Cat Shelter in Woodstock, CT or The MSPCA of Boston.

The Pickering & Son Westborough Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
