WESTBOROUGH – A large truck flipped onto its side on Monday afternoon in Westborough, spilling debris across Route 9 and prompting a lengthy backup near the Westborough/Southborough border.

State police responded to the scene alongside towing crews as they worked to clear the road.

The Westborough Police Department took to Facebook in the meantime, warning community members to “expect delays.”

“This will be a long duration event,” they wrote in a message around 1:30 p.m.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation sent its own message around the same time, noting that both the right, westbound lane of Route 9 and the I-495 southbound ramp onto Route 9 were closed due to the crash.

Crews were seen using a bobcat to clear debris as of 2:15 p.m.

More substantial heavy machinery had also been brought in.

Normal traffic flow resumed around 5 p.m.

A State Police spokesperson told the Community Advocate on Tuesday that a 22-year-old New Hampshire man had been driving this truck when it crashed.

That operator was not injured in the incident, as the truck cab did not itself tip over.

The operator had not been cited as of Tuesday morning, though the spokesperson said the cause of this crash remained under investigation.
