Fred Czera, 79, pitches a milk crate full of softballs to Richard Uber, 65, at Ghiloni Park in Marlborough. Both are members of the Marlborough Senior Panthers softball team and were keeping in practice until the next week’s game.
Marlborough – Ferdinand A Scerra Jr passed away peacefully on August 11, 2022. He was 88.
He is survived by his wife Norma(Baldelli). Sons Robert, James, Timothy & Patrick. Daughters Carol (Donald Claybrook) and Kathleen (James Davis). Grandchildren – Stephen Claybrook, Ryan Davis, Brittany, Tyler & Meaghan Scerra. Great grandchildren – Nathanial Scerra, Aracely and Adrian DeJesus. And sister Geraldine Rabidou. Fred is predeceased by his parents Ferdinand Sr & Josephine (Grasso) Scerra. And his brother Anthony Scerra.
He is best known as coach by his players and Mickey by his family. A name given to him by his grandson Stephen. His true passion was softball which he played after his battle with leukemia and his retirement. He was the driving force of what senior softball is today. Seven days a week, he could found on the ball field. He even had the honor of pitching to David “Big Papi” Ortiz for one of his commercials. He lived and breathed softball.
There will be no funeral services. He wanted his body donated to Umass for their part in his treatment & recovery from leukemia.
Donations in his name can be made to Sterling Animal Shelter or Barbs Dog Rescue. A celebration of life will be held September 17 at noon at the First United Methodist church 34 Felton St. Hudson. Please feel free to wear a baseball or sports shirt. Our dad was a Yankees fan, so if you have a shirt, please wear one. A light luncheon will be served immediately after.
