SHREWSBURY – A 20-year-old Shrewsbury woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident this weekend.

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.’s Office has identified the woman as Ghufran Mutar.

According to a press release from Early’s office, Mutar was crossing Route 9 at the intersection with South Street while she was on her way home from working at CVS just after 10 p.m. on Oct. 30 when she was hit.

Early’s office said that Mutar was brought to UMass Memorial Medical Center where she later died of her injuries.

Officers began searching for the vehicle which had left the scene of the crash. Westborough police located the vehicle – allegedly a Dodge Journey – on Oct. 31.  Early’s office said the vehicle had sustained “visible” damage to the front passenger side.

According to Shrewsbury Chief of Police Kevin Anderson, Shrewsbury and state police conducted the investigation and Shrewsbury police arrested the suspect last night.

“The state and Shrewsbury detectives worked diligently the last few days identifying and locating the operator. Great collaborative investigation by all agencies involved,” Anderson said.

Jerry Santiago Jr., 24, has been charged with leaving the scene of personal injury resulting in death and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

He was arraigned in Westborough District Court today.
