WESTBOROUGH – A sea of fans dressed in white and maroon flooded the court after the final whistle blew.

The Westborough High School volleyball team are state champions after they beat King Philip in the MIAA Division II finals 3-0.

“Surreal. Simply surreal,” said Captain and senior Caroline Brosnihan. “We’ve been working so hard for as long as I can remember on this season. We had a mission. We had a goal in mind. I’m glad we were able to execute it.”

The Rangers entered the postseason undefeated and number one seed in the division, defeating Dartmouth, North Quincy, Milton and Westfield in the postseason to make to the finals.

This is the first time Westborough has won the championship since 2017, though the team made it to the finals last year before falling to Hopkinton.

Head Coach Roger Anderson called being on top a combination of relief and joy.

“There’s no question that we stand on the shoulders of those that came before us for this team,” Anderson said. “We learned a lot being in the state championships last year and not winning it. We played the toughest schedule we could possibly find and did everything we could to prepare.”

King Philip, he said, threw everything at the Rangers. Over the course of the game, Westborough beat King Philip 25-19, 25-22 and 25-23.

“We stood tall and delivered in the biggest moments,” Rogers said.

He said that their team was “senior laden,” noting that Brosnihan delivered the last two  serves, which he called “great” and said they made King Philip uncomfortable. Captain Shannon Clark “has been a phenomenal setter,” and Rogers called Captain Kate Capello is an “unsung player” fighting for every point.

Captain Emily Coffey, Rogers said, wasn’t used serving until the past week, and “she came in and delivered, which is really awesome.”

Rogers also called out Captains Julie Goretti and Arianna Li, who had hurt ankles, but were “part of what makes us great every single day in the gym.”
