REGION – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that construction operations have been scheduled for the I-495 southbound off-ramp to Interstate 90. The work is scheduled to take place overnight on Thursday, Sept. 28, between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

During work, the following detour will be in place.

When the I-495 southbound exit 58 off-ramp to I-90 is closed, traffic will be directed to use exit 54 A (West Main Street) in order to access I-495 northbound to I-90.

This work is being undertaken as part of the I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project.

Appropriate signage, law enforcement details, and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work area.

Drivers who are traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed and use caution.

This work is weather permitting and subject to change.

During this preliminary construction phase, the total number of travel lanes on both I-495 and I-90 will remain the same.

Please take care to pay attention to all signage as it is posted. Over the course of the project, police details, changes in lane markings, temporary controls such as barriers and traffic cones, signage and other tools will be used to control traffic and create safe work zones within the project limits.

The interchange improvement project will replace the interchange, eliminate the old toll booth area and weaving areas, improve ramp spacing, acceleration and deceleration lanes, and add an auxiliary lane from I-495 northbound to Route 9. New bridges will be constructed on I-495 over I-90, on I-495 and I-90 over the MBTA/CSX/Amtrak lines, on I-495 northbound over Flanders Road, and on Fruit Street. The project design is taking place now through December 2024, with project completion scheduled for June 2027.
