Westborough Lions Club announce peace poster, youth speech contest
Ananya Vel, a sophomore at Westborough High School, has won the 2022 Westborough Lions Club Youth Speech Contest.

WESTBOROUGH – This fall, the Westborough Lions Club is once again hosting its annual peace poster contest for middle school-aged students and its youth speech contest for high school students.

Westborough has produced state-level winners in both contests in recent years.

The peace poster contest is designed for students between the ages of 11 and 13 to express their visions of peace and inspire the world through their art and creativity. This year’s poster theme is “Dare to Dream.”

Each poster will be judged on three criteria: artistic merit; originality; and expression of the theme.

Last year, Erica Sato of the Gibbons Middle School won the local, district and state competitions, and she was entered into the international competition.

The deadline to enter the Westborough Peace Poster Contest is Friday, Oct. 13. The winner will be selected by Saturday, Nov. 4. All entries will be displayed at the Westborough Public Library the week of Nov. 1.

More information on the contest and details on how to register can be found on the peace poster page on the Lions website, http://westboroughlionsclub.org/.

The youth speech contest will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Central One Federal Credit Union. It is designed for high school-aged students to provide a platform for them to hone their public speaking skills.

Each student must deliver a five-to eight-minute speech on this year’s topic: “With Which Historical Figure Would You Most Like to Speak?” Three judges will evaluate each speech on delivery, effectiveness and text. There are four levels of competition: local, region, district and state, with monetary prizes at each level, culminating in a $1,000 district-level prize and a $1,500 state prize.

The deadline to enter the speech contest is Friday, Nov. 3.

More information on the contest and details on how to enter can be found at http://westboroughlionsclub.org/, as well as on the state youth speech website http://lionsyouthspeech.org/.
