Obit Andrew B. ListonLewes, Del. – Andrew Barry Liston, age 74, of Lewes, Delaware, formerly of Shrewsbury and Boylston, Massachusetts, died at home on January 4, 2024 after a courageous battle with arterial lateral sclerosis (ALS) with his loving wife, Stephanie, by his side.

Andrew was born on October 31, 1949 in Niskayuna, New York, and was raised in the Worcester area in a large household surrounded by five cherished siblings, Lisa, Linda, Nancy, Ron and Peter. A graduate of Wachusett Regional High School, Andrew went on to earn degrees in Mathematics at the University of Vermont and in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Andrew met his devoted wife, Stephanie, at the University of Vermont, and they married in 1971. ‘Andy’ and ‘Steph’ raised three children, Ian, Seth and Rebecca, in Shrewsbury, where they lived until 2018.

Andrew cherished gatherings, large and small, with his beloved family. He took every opportunity to tell his family how happy and grateful he was to have the chance to be together. He connected with all generations through his quick wit and sweet, and sometimes dry, sense of humor.

Andrew was an avid traveler who enjoyed exploring places nearby, as much as he did traversing long distances behind the wheel with Steph, his navigator, by his side. Over the years, Andrew and Steph traveled to every state in the nation, much of the time by car. In recent years, Steph took the wheel and they continued to explore the shores of Delaware. Andrew relished a good treasure hunt at an antiques market or just having a coffee sitting in the ocean air. He delighted in relaxing with a drink and listening to music, especially a live concert or show.

Andrew was a prominent and respected member of the civil engineering and land surveying professions. He was committed to serving his clients in central Massachusetts in his daily work at Thompson-Liston Associates, which has been in business for more than a century. Andrew was dedicated to fostering ethical practices across the industry and served on numerous boards and councils at the state, national and international levels. He served as president of the Massachusetts Association of Land Surveyors and Civil Engineers, as chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, and as president of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. Andrew also served on the United States Council for International Engineering Practice.

Andrew is survived by Stephanie Bolton Liston of Lewes, DE, Ian Liston and Margaret Chou of Wilmington, DE, Seth and Kelly Liston of Greenville, RI and Rebecca and Christopher DiJulia of Wayland, MA. Andrew was the loving grandfather to Charlotte, Lindsay, Carter, Sophia, Garrett, Kaitlyn and Lily.

Friends and family are invited to attend a reception at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston, MA on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 10:30AM to celebrate Andrew’s life.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made by donating to The ALS Therapy Development Institute (https://www.als.net/donate/) in honor of Andrew.
