Januario Raposo CabralAug. 30, 1941 – Feb. 3, 2024

Hudson – Januario Raposo Cabral passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2024, in the ICU of Marlborough Hospital, surrounded by family. A profoundly stubborn individual, he chose end of life care instead of treatment for complications due to COPD, because he missed his wife of 53 years, Maria do Carmo, who predeceased him. Januario was 82 years old.

Januario was born and raised in Ribeira Seca da Ribeira Grande, São Miguel, Azores on August 30, 1941 to Manuel Cabral Paulino and Maria de Lourdes Raposo Estrela.

Januario lost his mother at the age of 10; to help support his family, he began working as a laborer on a tea plantation. Januario enlisted in the Portuguese army in 1963 and served in Guerra de Independência de Angola from 1965 to 1967. After leaving the military, Januario married Maria do Carmo Batista Rego in São Miguel, in 1970. He adopted Maria’s daughter, Ema, before immigrating to Hudson, Massachusetts, where the couple had a second child, George.

Januario worked at Independent Cable, in Hudson, from 1970 to his retirement. Known as a dedicated and reliable worker, Januario regularly worked overtime to support his family. Januario’s strength was always his work ethic. Despite a variety of vices, his commitment to providing for his family always shone through. Januario was a very financially generous person, and he was proud to have supported both of his children through college.

During retirement, Januario found enormous fulfillment spending much of his time with his beloved grandsons, Ethan and Joshua, who affectionally called him “Bubba.” Once they grew up, he divided his time between the bedside of his wife, who developed dementia and passed away in 2023, and Old School House Restaurant and Pub, in Hudson, until it closed later in the same year. In addition to wine, cigarettes, lottery tickets, and whoppie pies, Januario enjoyed being outside, growing vegetables in his garden and birdwatching.

An avid sports fan, Januario supported Sporting Clube de Portugal since his youth. However, his fandom was strongest for “Os Patriots”.  Half of his English language vocabulary consisted of football terminology. Adam Vinatier’s field goal to win Super Bowl XXXVI, the Patriots’ first, was one of the happiest moments of his life.

Januario’s family will miss his stories about getting into trouble as a youth and his experiences in the Portuguese military, as well as his unique sayings and songs.

Januario is survived by his two children; Ema Cabral Burke and her husband, Gary Burke of Canton, CT, and George Batista Cabral and his wife, Amélie Cabral of Marlborough. He also leaves behind his two deeply loved grandsons, Ethan Burke and Joshua Burke. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, João Luís Paulino and Estrela Paulino of Hudson, brothers, Jorge Paulino, Guilherme Paulino, and Manuel Cabral and sisters, Beatriz Carreira, Conceição Paulino, Diamantina Freitas and Maria do Carmo Melo of São Miguel. Januario is also survived by his brother-in-law, Manuel Rego and his wife MaryBeth Rego, sisters-in-law Elisia Rego and Lucrenia Rego, as well as a large extended family of many in-laws, godchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Januario was predeceased by his wife, Maria do Carmo Batista Rego Cabral, his brother, José Paulino, brothers-in-law William Hinchey, José Batista Rego, João Batista Rego and sisters-in-law, Fernanda L. Brasil and Maria Gloria Hinchey da Paz, as well as his nephews Eduardo Rego, Nicholas Rego and Phillip Hinchey.

Relatives and friends are invited to a period of visitation from 4 PM to 7 PM on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Tighe Hamilton Regional Funeral Home, 50 Central St., Hudson, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Friday, February 16, 2024 at Saint Michael Parish, 21 Manning St., Hudson, MA, followed by a procession to Saint Michael Cemetery in Hudson for Committal Services.

Those who wish to send flowers, Edinboro Flower Shop of Marlborough, (508) 485-5852, will be creating floral arrangements for Januario’s family.
