Hudson/Marlborough – On March 2, a light snowfall steadily – and fittingly – occurred during the 18th annual Snowflake Charity Kickball Tournament. Over 20 teams consisting of 10 players good-naturedly competed on snow-covered grounds at Hudson-Concord Elks Lodge 959.
Veteran tournament participants have experienced various weather conditions, locations and worthy benefiting causes throughout its 18-year history. Last year’s tourney took place for the first time at Hudson’s Elks’ field the day after a nor’easter.
This year’s main beneficiary was Connor Walker, a Marlborough High School 2017 alum and now sophomore at Saint Anselm College in Goffstown, N.H. While playing a college football game this past September, he suffered a spinal cord injury in a helmet-to-helmet collision. Money raised from the tournament will help defray costs incurred during his recovery. Connor attended the tourney with his parents Jean and Rob.
“This is an amazing day and I’m feeling great,” Connor said. “We’re taking steps in the right direction.”
Also attending the tourney was Layla Krieger, almost age 3. Layla’s family was last year’s main beneficiary while she underwent treatment for stage 4 neuroblastoma. Her father Shawn reports that Layla is recovering well.
The tourney concluded with Marlboro Shamrocks as the winning team.
Funds were raised with team entry fees and base sponsors. Fundraising continued with raffles at a post-tournament party at the Prospector East Saloon in Marlborough, where its owner Bob Kays donated food. Kim and Joe Otte of Hudson served as event co-chairs.
