Region – Today is Friday, Sept. 28, the 272nd ?day of 2012.
On this day in 1941, the man many consider the greatest Red Sox player of all time, Ted Williams, increased his batting average to .406. “Teddy Ballgame” was the last man to hit over .400 – he ranks #24 overall on players with the highest averages.
On this day in 1918, a massive epidemic of the flu hit Philadelphia extremely hard. By the time the pandemic flu (which was also commonly known as the Spanish flu) had wreaked its wrath that year, an estimated 30 million people worldwide had died.
And on this day in 1994, 852 people were killed when the car ferry MS Estonia sunk in the Baltic Sea.
