Region – Today is Monday, Oct. 22, the 296th day of 2012.
Felix Baumgartner has become an instant celebrity for completing a 24-mile record setting parachute jump. But on this day in 1797 it was a French man, André-Jacques Garnerin, who made the first successful parachute jump. He did his from a hydrogen balloon 3,200 feet above Paris.
On this day in 1913, 250 coal miners were killed in an explosion in Dawson, New Mexico.
And on this day in 1966, the Supremes became the first all-female music group to have a number one selling album -? The Supremes A’ Go-Go.
Today's birthdays include – actress Annette Funicello (1942); the late Stooge, Curly Howard (1903); and figure skating star Brian Boitano (1963).

1. Tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 23, the Marlborough Country Club will be donating profits from the day to the Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund, which provides educational assistance grants to the children of Massachusetts military personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty while deployed. 2. October, is of course, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Tomorrow evening, Tuesday, Oct. 23, Meininger Family Chiropractic will be presenting a free breast health workshop at Tatnuck Bookseller.

3. The Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts (BIA-MA) will be holding two fall workshops locally this week, that will be open to survivors of brain injury, family members, and the general public

4. Tomorrow evening, Tuesday, Oct.23, the Northborough Art Guild will feature an acrylic demonstration by artist Bruce Wood, who is known as a contemporary American Impressionist painter and an avant-garde filmmaker.

5. A vigil to honor victims and survivors of domestic violence and to raise awareness for issues of domestic violence in our communities will be held Wednesday, ?Oct. 24, from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. ,on the Shrewsbury town common. The vigil, which is sponsored by ADVISE (Against Domestic Violence in Shrewsbury Education Project) and Saheli (Support for South Asian Women), will be held as an multi-faith event with participation and support from religious and civic organizations in the Shrewsbury area.

6. The 24th Annual Hudson Downtown Trick or Treat will be held Wednesday, Oct. 25, 4 to 6 p.m. This year's event features over 40 participating businesses and many attractions, including the JFK Middle School Band at 4 p.m. and Spooky Stories at the Unitarian Church from 4 to 6 p.m.
