Today is Tuesday, Oct. 23, the 297th day of 2012.
On this day in 1983, 220 Marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers were killed after a suicide bomber drove a truck filled with 2,200 pounds of explosives into an U.S. Marine Corps barracks at the Beirut International Airport. A few minutes later, a second bomber drove into the basement of the nearby French paratroopers’ barracks, killing 58 more people.
It would not be for another 70 years before they would get the right to vote but on this day in 1850 the first National Women's Rights Convention was held in Worcester. Topics on their agenda included equal wages, expanded education and career opportunities, women's property rights, marriage reform and temperance.
And on this day in 2008 it was one of the worst days ever for stock markets around the world. In what has become known as “Bloody Friday,” many markets experienced their worst declines ever.
Today's birthdays include – soccer great Pele (1940); local football star Doug Flutie (1962); and comedian Weird Al Yankovic (1959).
