Peaslee School celebrates 100th day of school by giving back

Northborough - Many area schools celebrate the 100th day of the school year by featuring the number 100 in student activities. For example, students may create a picture using 100 items, or find 100 similar objects to bring into school for show and tell. Third-grade teacher at Peaslee School Melissa Farrell wanted to do something different: she suggested the students participate in a food drive to collect much-needed items for the local food pantry.

Shrewsbury Youth & Family Services explores new challenges

Shrewsbury – Soon after starting as executive director of Shrewsbury Youth & Family Services (SYFS) last June, Terry Cassidy met with community leaders and heard the same comment repeatedly. "I kept hearing how surprised they were that so many people don's know what SYFS does," she said. She learned that residents are familiar with their modest building and its "SYFS" sign at 240 Maple Avenue, but unaware it's the hub of activity beyond that address.

Marlborough/Hudson cat rescue group gets new name

Marlborough/Hudson - Metrowest Animal Awareness Society (MAAS) was founded in 2002 as a 501(3)c feline rescue organization operated entirely by volunteers. In order to control the feral and homeless cat population in Marlborough, Hudson and surrounding towns, MAAS began a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program with feeding stations where the cats are fed daily. The organization maintains a foster care adoption program, with Meow Mixers (meet-and-greet events) twice a month at the Pet Source locations in Stow and Marlborough.

Helping developmentally disabled individuals ‘thrive’

Region – The nonprofit organization founded in 1973 as Greater Marlborough Programs Inc. (GMPI) changed its name in March to Thrive Support & Advocacy. While Thrive is headquartered in Marlborough, it currently helps families with developmentally disabled children and adults in over 30 communities including Grafton, Hudson, Marlborough, Northborough, Shrewsbury, Southborough and Westborough.

Loyal supporters outshine rainy start of motorcycle ride

Marlborough – Nearly 300 motorcyclists and passengers endured sudden downpours Aug. 6 as they started the seventh annual Shawna Jean Larassa (SJL) Memorial Motorcycle Ride. The 50-plus mile ride through 10 communities began and ended at the Marlborough Moose Family Center 1129. There, others joined them for a day of family fun with new attractions.

Third Overdose Awareness Vigil gathers crowd in downtown Marlborough

Marlborough - The third International Overdose Awareness Day Vigil at the Walker Building in Marlborough ended on Aug. 31 with hundreds of attendees raising memorial candles into the sky as the voice of Godsmack’s Sully Erna echoed down Main Street. This year’s was the biggest event yet for organizer and advocate Kathy Leonard of Marlborough. Several hundred attendees came from across Central Massachusetts to hear more than an hour of speeches and a musical performance by Erna. Leonard organized the event to remember those lost to the opioid epidemic and destigmatize addiction.
