Cancer foundation uses new app to navigate the cancer recovery process

Marlborough - The Cancer Resource Foundation Inc. (CRF) was established after its co-founders, President and Chair Karleen R. Habin, RN, BCCS, MPHC and Chief Executive Officer Mary Lou Woodford, RN, MBA, CCM, repeatedly experienced the overwhelming confusion that comes with navigating a cancer diagnosis. The CRF is a national 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization headquartered in Marlborough with a mission to advocate and provide support for the prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship of cancer through patient assistance, education and research.

Marlborough Police Department receives K-9 grant

Marlborough - The Marlborough Police Department has been awarded a $25,000 grant by the Stanton Foundation that will help launch the city's first K-9 program. City Councilors accepted the grant at the request of Mayor Arthur Vigeant during their July 8 meeting. "As we discussed during the [fiscal year 2014] budget process, this program will be a valuable tool that will assist our police department in apprehensions, investigations and seizures," said Vigeant in his communication to the council. "I want to thank Chief [Mark] Leonard for his dogged pursuit of this grant as well as the Stanton Foundation for funding this worthy request."

Councilors approve water agreement with Hudson

Marlborough - In the "spirit of being a good neighbor," the City Council unanimously approved an inter-municipal agreement (IMA) to have the city supplement the town of Hudson's water supply on a temporary basis. Mayor Arthur Vigeant requested an emergency connection to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) water supply system at the July 8 council meeting. In his communication to the council, the mayor said: "As a neighboring community who is best positioned to assist the town of Hudson during this time, I authorized drafting of an inter-municipal agreement that would allow us to supply Hudson up to an average of 500,000 gallons per day for distribution. The MWRA has asked that this IMA be executed no later than July 15, 2013, as their board of directors made their approval contingent on both Marlborough and Hudson entering into the agreement."

Marlborough - In 1960, when Regina Cahill accepted a position of clerk in the Marlborough tax collector's office she did not expect to continue in City Hall until 2013 - almost 53 years later. After three years in her original post, she moved across the hall to the Assessor's Office and remained there until May when she retired. "I started as a junior clerk, and then continued to senior clerk, principal clerk to the head clerk position where I stayed until I decided to leave," she said. "I loved my job and especially the people. I will miss everyone."

Forum on new Senior Center draws crowd

Marlborough – Over 200 city residents gathered for a public forum at the city's current senior center June 26 to discuss a proposed new center that would be built at Ward Park. The proposal to build a new center at that location has been met with approval by many of the city's residents who feel the current location at 240 Main St. does not adequately service the needs of the city's senior citizens. But the plan has also been vehemently opposed by a number of citizens, especially members of the Ward Park Neighborhood Association.
