Westborough family makes difficult decision regarding historic tree

Westborough - For nearly two centuries, a majestic tulip poplar tree proudly graced the back yard of Eugene and Shirley Bailey’s Westborough home. At 130 feet tall, it provided beauty and shade. But sadly, in spite of meticulous care and treatment over the years, the decision was recently made that the tree was rotting beyond repair and hence, must come down. Steve Stratton, the owner and president of Templeman Tree Service, Inc., had been working with the Baileys on the tree’s care.

Penta holds fourth annual Military Appreciation Day ceremony

Westborough – Local and state officials participated in a moving ceremony May 11 at Penta Communications, Inc., to commemorate Military Appreciation Day. The Northborough American Legion Post 234 Color Guard presented the colors to start the ceremony before the dignitaries and other guests were welcomed by the company’s CEO Deborah Penta. Noting that it was the fourth year the event had been held and once again, anticipated rains held off, Penta said she believed it was “not because of us gathered here this morning but because of those veterans who we are honoring today.”

Northborough - Over 50 volunteers occupied the parking lot at Trinity Church April 29 as they teamed up with Habitat for Humanity MetroWest/Great Worcester’s Operation Playhouse. Two playhouses were built, designed, and decorated and at the end of the day were unveiled and donated to two local military families.

First responders raise money for charity at ‘Heroes Cup’

Marlborough - Nearly 1,000 first responders from the U.S. and Canada raised money for charity during the recent Heroes Cup hockey tournament held at the New England Sports Center (NESC) in Marlborough from April 21-23. The brainchild of Sudbury firefighter Mike Matros, the tournament and its organizers partnered with the Last Call Foundation to donate 25 percent of its fundraising to the charity. In addition to the Last Call Foundation, teams then selected individual charities to represent. Organizers donated sections of the remaining money to those charities at the end of the tournament.
