Corridor Nine to host 5k and kids challenge as part of Applefest celebration

Region – For the 23rd year in a row, the Corridor Nine Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a 5k in conjunction with Northborough’s Applefest celebration. The race will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, starting and ending at the Marion E. Zeh School, 33 Howard St. The event will welcome runners, joggers and walkers and, once again, feature a Team Challenge. New this year will be a special Kids Adventure Race for kids 11 and under which will be held immediately after the 5k that day.

Second annual Kane Charity Classic raises $51,000

Shrewsbury/Westborough – Held Aug. 15 at the Haven Country Club in Boylston, the second annual Hannah Kane Charity Classic golf tournament raised $51,000. The full day of activities began with a continental breakfast and concluded with a 19th-Hole Reception sponsored by Central One Federal Credit Union. There, state Rep. Hannah Kane, R-Shrewsbury, announced that the First-Place Gross Team Award was earned by a foursome of Central One staff members.

Shrewsbury library donors treated to sneak preview

Shrewsbury – An open house was held Aug. 10 at the newly expanded and renovated Shrewsbury Public Library, so that the major donors could see the positive effects of their substantial contributions to the successful $1.75 million fundraising campaign. Maps were passed out for a self-guided tour of the building. Voters had approved a measure to expand and renovate the library in a ballot vote Nov. 5, 2013. The town received approximately $8 million from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners for the project. The town’s portion, $13.3 million, will be funded through a debt exclusion. Supporters committed to also raising $1.75 million through fundraising endeavors.

Rotary Club of Westborough holds seventh annual triathlon

Westborough – The Rotary Club of Westborough, in conjunction with Sun Multisport, sponsored the seventh annual Westborough Rotary Sprint Triathlon. Over 300 athletes participated in the race, which was held Aug. 14.

Westborough honored as ‘Purple Heart Town’

The town of Westborough joined in honoring those who have been awarded a Purple Heart with a ceremony held at a spot on Turnpike Road (Route 9 east) near the Northborough/Westborough town line. A special sign was placed in this spot under an “Entering Westborough” sign that acknowledges that Westborough is now a “Purple Heart Town.”

Grafton Police host 11th National Night Out locally

Grafton – For the 11th year, Grafton residents and visitors joined thousands of communities nationwide Aug. 2 by celebrating the 33rd annual National Night Out. The event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and locally by the Grafton Police Department. Designed to strengthen a partnership between police and community, the family-friendly block party is also an opportunity for residents to share their concerns with police and other town officials.

Proposals sought for Westborough State Hospital property

Westborough – On a hill off of Lyman Street, near Lake Chauncy and neighboring Northborough, the former Westborough State Hospital property sits silent, a vestige of the past.
