Four-time cancer survivor prepares to walk three fundraisers

Marlborough – Marlborough resident Veronica "Vikki" Crowley has a family history of various types of cancer, which took the lives of her mother, sister, two aunts and a nephew. She's also a four-time cancer survivor still battling the disease. "I shouldn's be here, but I keep coming back," she said with a laugh. "I'se lived through four types of cancer. I don's understand why I's still here, unless it's to finish something I'se started."

St. John's triumphs in track meet

Shrewsbury - The 52nd annual "Fred Warren" District E Boys Class Track Meet was held May 11 at Shrewsbury High School. St. John's High School was the Class A winner with 101.60 points. Wachusett Regional High School was second with 87 points, and Algonquin Regional High School's 76 points gave them third place. Host Shrewsbury High School earned fourth place with 53.60 points; Westborough High School took seventh place with 34 points; and Marlborough High School was 13th with 8 points. In Class B, Hudson High School came in 12th place with 11 points.

Senior Songsters thank Jim and Linda Duncan for the memories

Southborough/Westborough – The Southborough Senior Songsters transported audiences on a musical trip down memory lane with "The "40s Hit Parade," presented April 26 and 28 at the Southborough Senior Center. Featuring 35 singers ages 60 to 91, the musical-comedy revue was produced and directed by Jim and Linda Duncan, of Westborough.

Second annual speech showcase honors Polito, students

Shrewsbury – The Shrewsbury High School (SHS) Speech and Debate Team hosted the second annual Evening Speech Showcase May 4 to highlight the team's talents through student performances. Awards were also presented during the event to Karyn E. Polito, a former selectman and state representative, as well as to four SHS students. "The football team, they'se on Shrewsbury Cable. A lot of people know about what they do, but not a lot of people know what the speech and debate team does," event co-organizer Robert Mahowald said.

Southborough mom is ‘flying high’

Marathon participants open Northborough's baseball and softball season

Northborough – The Northborough Baseball and Softball Association kicked off its 2013 season May 4 with the annual baseball parade. The opening day was dedicated to the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy. Six residents who ran in the marathon this year - Susan Willwerth, Keith Pellerin, Kristen McIsaac, Chris Benestad, Andy Cosgrove, and Meredith Kent - were invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Other opening day activities included a barbecue, hot air balloon rides, Whiffle ball tournament and a home run derby.

Northborough ‘cleans up’

Over 175 volunteers picked up trash and other debris at 55 sites throughout Northborough April 27 during the Louise Houle Town Cleanup Day. Volunteers were treated to a cookout after the cleanup was done. Houle, a longtime community volunteer who created this annual event over 25 years ago, passed away in 2010. The event was sponsored by the Northborough Community Affairs Committee and Northborough Women's Club.

Algonquin wins varsity track invitational

Region - Shrewsbury High School hosted the girls' track and field Varsity District Invitational April 27 in Shrewsbury. The girls competed in several track and field events including javelin, discus, long jump, and hurdles. Algonquin Regional High School placed first with 93 points, Wachusett Regional High School came in second with 71 points, and host Shrewsbury High School's 69 points put them in third place. Hudson High School was right behind with 33 points (fifth place), while Westborough High School's 26 points put them in seventh place.
