“Algonquin Lip Dub” places at DECA

Northborough/Southborough - For Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) seniors Nic Zanghi, Giles Ober and Sam Huddart, the Algonquin "Lip Dub" YouTube sensation, which they created to promote school spirit and showcase the camaraderie of the student body at "The Gonk," has taken on a life of its own. The video, which featured 900-plus students lip syncing and performing the song "Good Time" by Carly Rae Jepson and Owl City, generated more than 23,000 hits before it was removed from YouTube due to a copyright infringement just 72 hours after it debuted.

“Tension” rocks the community for 10 years

Shrewsbury – Five Shrewsbury residents collectively known as Tension have been volunteering to perform classic rock hits at fundraisers and family events for 10 years. The idea to form a band started when John O"Brien realized he shared more in common than an interest in golf with his buddies Joe Arcabascio and Joe Cantin, better known as "Sammy" because he's a huge fan of rocker Sammy Hagar.

Team 1100 Robotics wins Chairman's Award

Region- For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people to pursue higher education and careers in science, technology and engineering through hands-on mentorship from people in those fields. Algonquin's FIRST Team 1100 was founded in 2003. The current Team 1100 is led by parent, mentor and engineer Dan Strickland and advised by Applied Arts and Technology teacher George Clarke. While Algonquin's Team 1100 is based out of Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS), the team roster includes students from many surrounding towns.

St. John's students recall experiences as “Britsionarys”

Shrewsbury – Many high school students take advantage of February vacation to escape to somewhere warm, perhaps Florida or the Caribbean. During this year's break, eight St. John's High School students did journey south to a warmer climate. But it was not a tropical vacation to paradise they were on – rather it was to the island of Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world. The students traveled there to work with the organization, "Be Like Brit."

$500 fundraising check presented to WCFB

Shrewsbury – Laurie Bender, the owner of Home Instead Senior Care of Greater Worcester County and MetroWest presented a $500 check to Jean McMurray, the director of the Worcester County Food Bank (WCFB), March 14 at the food bank's headquarters. The monies were raised from a Facebook campaign the company held during the month of February.

Shrewsbury cheerleaders celebrate “historic season”

Shrewsbury – After winning a Division 1 state title and a third-place finish at the New England Interscholastic Spirit Championship, the Shrewsbury High School (SHS) cheerleaders are now celebrating what they are calling their "historic season." The team won its first-ever state title March 10 with a strong showing at the competition held at Tantasqua Regional High School in Fiskdale. SHS competed against 12 other teams in Division 1 and won with a score of 182.75 out of 200 points. Winning the title allowed the girls to go on to the New England regional meet, which was held in Lawrence March 16.

Marlborough – The Marlborough High School (MHS) chapter of American Field Service (AFS) conducts several fundraisers and community service projects throughout the school year. But their longest running event that draws the most attention – and the most laughs – is a parody of beauty pageants with male contestants. The 24th annual Mr. MHS 2013 Pageant was presented March 15 at the Whitcomb Middle School Auditorium with a Las Vegas theme.

Living across the street from Proctor School in a neighborhood flooded with children, Kevin spent countless hours on the school courts honing his skills. As a teenager in the late "70s, Kevin played guard at Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS). Zeh nurse makes “purple” promise

Northborough - The Marion E. Zeh School has been raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) for nine years. To date, students have collected over $17,000 for the "Pennies for Patients" campaign, which aims to involve kids by teaching them about community and helping others by joining in the fight against blood cancers. The service learning, character education and philanthropy program asks students to collect spare change over a three-week period. Campaign dates for Zeh were Jan. 28 to Feb. 22.

“Silver surfers” take to technology

Northborough/Southborough - Under the direction of math teacher Eileen Palmer and guidance counselor Jason Lessard, Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) Community Action Program (CAP) students have spent the last month holding technology seminars for seniors at both the Southborough Senior Center and the Northborough Senior Center. The tech-savvy teens have made great strides in closing any technology generation gaps, showing seniors easy ways to mute their phones, text, change ring tones, take pictures or download a book on a Kindle.

Hudson - The Internet is a portal for television and movies to reach other cultures, and it is not just Hollywood media that is crossing boundaries. Anime, or Japanese cartoons, are watched by Americans on television, DVD and websites such as Crunchyroll.com. Hudson resident Chris Beveridge has been a fan of the genre for years and has even created a writing career around his fandom. Now founder of FandomPost.com, he enters his 15th year of this line of work this month.
