Mass Academy of Math and Science at WPI recognizes “Commended Students”Worcester – Local students were named among 10 students at the Mass Academy of Math and Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) as “National Merit Commended Students” in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program: Dennis Giaya, Daniel Huang, Divya Satishchandra, and Rohit Satishchandra, all of Shrewsbury.

A letter of commendation from the academy and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented to these scholastically talented seniors.

“Mass Academy is very proud of these young men and women. Credit goes not only to the hard work put in by our students, but to the teachers of their sending schools who worked with them along the way to prepare them well for this exam,” said Mass Academy Director Michael Barney. “Through a collective effort and tremendous work ethic, they have reached a high level of achievement.”

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic progress. Although they will not continue in the 2013 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
