Southborough – Selectmen William Boland and John Rooney said they were “caught off guard” when former Chair Bonnie Phaneuf announced at the end of their Feb. 8 meeting she was leaving the board effective immediately. Boland, who will now serve as chair, said with the annual election less than 100 days away, it did not make sense for the town to hold a special election before that to replace Phaneuf. He and Rooney will, Boland said, continue on with business as usual until a new member joins them in May.
