October nor'saster affects Tower Hill Botanic GardenDear Friend of Tower Hill,

It was the surprise that no one celebrated. New England's reputation for spectacular autumn color and refreshing fall weather was overshadowed on Saturday, October 29, when winter paid an early visit. The storm left a suffocating mantle of more than a foot of heavy, wet snow on trees and shrubs that had not shed their leaves – a recipe for disaster.

When Horticulture staff arrived early Sunday morning, the entry road was nearly impassable. The large number of downed trees blocking the way foretold of the impact discovered deeper into the Gardens and trails.

The damage has been extensive, most especially in the Inner Park where a limb dismantled a portion of the Temple of Peace. The Magnolia collection-in full leaf as with most of the deciduous trees-was especially hard hit.

The Garden was closed for three days. We had no electricity for nearly 48 hours, therefore we were forced to cancel the remainder of the Ikebana Show, a disappointment for the many exhibitors who worked diligently to stage an incredible display.

We commend our horticulture staff, methodically working to restore order to the chaos in the Gardens and grounds. For the safety of our visitors, we have CLOSED the woodland walking trails for now.

Many of our members and friends have asked, “What can we do to help?” There are many ways you can support us through this setback. If you'se allowed your membership to lapse, renew it today. Please give generously to our annual Fall Appeal, which you will soon receive in the mail. Visit the Orchid Show this weekend, and the Open House next Sunday, November 13, and bring your friends!

Again, thank you for your ongoing support of Tower Hill Botanic Garden, “the world-class garden that's always in season.” We are certain that together, we can ensure the preservation and enhancement of Tower Hill Botanic Garden for years to come.

Yours sincerely,

The Staff of Tower Hill Botanic Garden
