Region –Today is Thursday, May 16, the 138th day of 2012.
With the recent declaration by President Barack Obama that he now supports gay marriage, it is interesting to remember that on this day in 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to allow marriage between same-sex partners. On that day 78 same-sex couples across the commonwealth exchanged vows.
In 1974, the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) was a hot topic of conversation, mostly because they had kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst. On this day in 1974, the Los Angeles police raided the group's headquarters, killing six SLA members in the process.
Hearst was involved in some of the group's crimes but claimed she was coerced into participating. She ultimately served two years in prison before her sentence was commuted by President Jimmy Carter.
Today's birthdays include – champion prizefighter Sugar Ray Leonard (1956), Irish New Age singer Enya (1961), Trent Reznor of the band, the Nine Inch Nails (1965), and the late leader of Iran, the Ayatollah Khomeini (1902).
