What services does Metrowest Oral Surgical Associates provide?
“We offer oral and maxillofacial surgery. That means we cover wisdom teeth, dental implants, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery and corrective jaw surgery. I also do Botox injections for both pain and cosmetic reasons, and cosmetic facial fillers as well,” said Dr. Wael Youseff, who joined the practice two years ago.
Metrowest Oral Surgical Associates has offices in both Northborough and Milford, and the practice’s surgeons work in both offices. Dr. Youseff and the other two oral surgeons, Dr. Steven V. Pittman and Dr. John P. Ouano, are all board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
The medical staff is CPR-certified and trained in anesthesia. Almost all of the surgery is done in the two offices unless a patient has pre-existing conditions that require a hospital setting. Most patients are referred by either their general dentist or physician, who remains involved in their treatment after the surgery.
What do you specialize in?
“I specialize in dental implants and TMJ surgery, surgery on the temporomandibular joint just in front of the ear. No one else in this area offers TMJ surgery except the teaching centers in Boston,” said Dr. Youseff. “All of us do dental implants, but that’s also my interest area.
“I am originally from Syria and went to dental school in Damascus, then, to be licensed in the U.S., I went to dental school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where my family lives.
“After dental school, I did a residency in oral and facial surgery at Boston University for four years and then a fellowship in facial reconstruction surgery in St. Louis. I went back to Boston University as an assistant professor and was on the Trauma Committee at Boston Medical Center.
“I chose to join this practice for community and family reasons. I married a young lady from Worcester and my in-laws live there.”
When are dental implants used?
“Implants were originally introduced in the 1980s and became popular in the 1990s. Now we can do implants that are extremely small and the success rate is very high, in the 95- to 98-percent range,” Dr. Youseff said.
“Implants are used when you have missing teeth and want to replace them. Replacing missing teeth with implants is the Mercedes, the top treatment you can get. They function like natural teeth and look like natural teeth.
“Sports injuries, particularly hockey injuries, are a major reason young people have implants.”
What other things do you do professionally?
“I give lectures at Blackstone Valley [Regional Vocational Technical High School] for dental assistant classes. We also have a study club with lectures on topics such as implants or emergency oral surgery for referring dentists in the area as well as a newsletter for them on implants,” Dr. Youseff said.
Metrowest Oral Surgical Associates has a staff dedicated to guiding patients through the process of having oral and maxillofacial surgery, including answering questions about insurance coverage.
