Shrewsbury – Recent rains cleared the snow, while this week’s cold stretch allowed glassy ice to form at Dean Park pond. Skaters Carlton Lo and his son Joshua joined Kevin McKenna for some impromptu hockey.
When asked how he knew if the ice was safe, McKenna replied, “I’ve been skating here for 30 years. I know this ice. I look at the depth of the cracks and listen to the sounds. If I hear big booms that means thick ice. If I hear crackling, I get off the ice fast.”
