Shrewsbury – The visiting Algonquin Regional High School Tomahawks football team outlasted the Shrewsbury High School Colonials, and came away with a 31-21 win in a tension-filled game played Oct. 14. Both teams are battling for playoff spots this season.
Algonquin jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with touchdown runs by Marcus Ellis and Max Cerasoli. Shrewsbury tied up the score at 14-14 in the second quarter with a Drew Campanale touchdown pass to Chris Campbell and a rushing touchdown by AJ Laramee, but Algonquin responded with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Barry to Colin Robinson to take a 21-14 lead into halftime.
Shrewsbury tied up the game once again in the third quarter, with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Campanale to Campbell. Algonquin held Shrewsbury scoreless in the final quarter, while putting up a field goal by John Polymeros to break the tie, followed by a 15-yard rushing touchdown by Barry to seal the victory.
Algonquin improves to 4-2 on the season and will host Wachusett next Friday, Oct. 21. Shrewsbury falls to 3-3 and will be on the road for their next game, where they will face St. Peter-Marian on Saturday, Oct. 22.
