Fitchburg – The Shrewsbury High School boys’ ice hockey team defeated Algonquin Regional High School by a score of 4-1 in the Central Division 3 hockey Championship game, played March 11 at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg.
Shrewsbury and Algonquin split their two regular season meetups, each winning one with identical 2-1 scores, but Shrewsbury was in control of this game right from the start. Tyler Borys scored just 1:48 into the game. Anthony Quinlivan scored a second period goal, followed by a lucky shot by Jack Tepper that deflected off an Algonquin defender’s skate and into the net, giving the Colonials a 3-0 lead.
Algonquin avoided the shutout with a third period goal by Jack Thibodeau, with Henry Alford getting the assist.
Anthony Quinlivan scored an empty net goal in the closing seconds to complete the scoring.
As Central Division 3 champions, Shrewsbury advances to the state Semifinal and faces the West champions Westfield on Wednesday. Algonquin’s season concludes with a 12-5-5 overall record.
