Shrewsbury – Louis J. Kern Sr., 99, longtime Shrewsbury resident, died peacefully Dec. 26, 2018 after a brief illness at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. He was the husband of Leone Kallio-Kern.

Born, raised and educated in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Ludwig and Emilie E. (Holzapfel) Kern. Louis was a 1937 graduate of Freeport High School in Long Island. He was married to the late Ruth (Lambertson) Kern in 1941 with whom he shared 53 years.

He retired from the Air Force after dedicating 20 years in the military, for which he enlisted in 1939. He was very proud of his service to his country. Not ready to retire just yet, he worked at Raytheon for some 10 years and then continued to work as an electrician until retiring at 70.

Louis and Leone were married in 1999 and settled in Shrewsbury. He was a member of the Shrewsbury Masonic Lodge No. 423 and of the Greendale Retired Men’s Club in Worcester. He enjoyed gardening, reading and time with family.

In addition to his wife, Leone, Louis is survived by his son, Louis J. Kern Jr. and his wife Susan of Dummerston, Vt., and step-daughters Eileen M. Daley and her husband John of W. Yarmouth and Karen L. Tucker and her husband David of S. Yarmouth. He was predeceased by his grandson, Nathaniel L. Kern.

A funeral service for Louis was held Dec. 29 in the Chapel of the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home.
