Self-defense workshop for women to be held in Westborough

Westborough – The office of Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis and the Vanessa T. Marcotte Foundation have announced they have formed a partnership to hold self-defense workshops for women.

A workshop will be held Tuesday, Jan. 22 at the Boroughs Family Branch – YMCA of Massachusetts, 4 Valente Drive, Westborough.

During this active participatory workshop, women will practice realistic self-defense tactics. They will also learn situational awareness and how to handle a confrontation both verbally and mentally.

All participants must be 18+ and sign a waiver. Registration is at 5:45 p.m. and the program begins promptly at 6 p.m. The registration fee is $15 per person and attendees will receive a complimentary t-shirt.

Vanessa Marcotte was a 27-year-old American woman who, while jogging on a rural road in Princeton, Mass. in August of 2017, was assaulted and murdered. The foundation was set up by her family and friends as a way to partner with organizations, such as the sheriff’s office, to provide educational programs and mentorship opportunities to promote female empowerment and gender equality.
