Shrewsbury – This past summer Shrewsbury signed a new contract with Waste Management with mixed results. Some residents complained that the company came late or worse, not at all. There was also confusion on what would be accepted as recyclable materials.
Now, town officials are reviewing the impact and fees associated with the “Pay As You Throw” program.
When the program was initially set up in 2008, it was anticipated that that the costs would be evenly be split between resident fees and the tax levy. But, with the costs of solid waste disposal increasing and the challenges of an ever changing global recycling market, many municipalities are struggling to find new solutions which don’t negatively impact residents.
