SHREWSBURY – Police found two guns and made two arrests at the scene of a fiery crash in Shrewsbury that left one person with serious injuries, July 5.

Officers responded to the intersection of Route 9 and Quinsigamond Avenue shortly after 2am following reports of “a serious motor vehicle accident” according to a press release.

They promptly found a Chevy Equinox on its roof and in flames. A Lexus vehicle, meanwhile, sat in the parking lot of a Burger King with what police described as “massive damage.”

Fire personnel extinguished the burning Equinox and assisted in extricating its sole occupant. That individual was immediately taken to UMass Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

The Lexus had five occupants, all of whom escaped this crash with minimal injuries, police said.

Officers, however, located two handguns in the car. At least one of those handguns matched the caliber of shell casings located in an adjoining parking lot, according to police.

Officers arrested Leosol Vargas, 23, of Hopkinton. He was charged with OUI liquor resulting in serious bodily injury, operating to endanger, drinking alcohol from an open container in a motor vehicle and possession of narcotics according to that police press release.

Officers also arrested Benjamin Peterson, 22, of West Boylston. He was charged with two counts of an intoxicated licensee carrying a firearm, the same press release said.

This incident remains under active investigation.
