WESTBOROUGH – The Westborough Select Board unanimously voted to name Saturday, July 31, 2021 as Michael Haskell Day during their meeting on July 20.

Haskell was a Vietnam War veteran from Westborough who died during the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing in the Lebanese Civil War. Board Chair Allen Edinberg said the Select Board had been asked to honor Haskell as a new memorial at the Forbes Municipal Building will be dedicated to him on July 31.

Veterans Advisory Board Member Andy Toorock said that Warren Griffin, the National Junior Vice-Commandant of the Marine Corps League, would be the dedication’s main speaker. Toorock encouraged the board to support the motion before they voted.

“It’s the right thing to do,” he said. “Back in the day, the Board named a street after Michael Haskell, and that was pretty significant and I think we should continue this.”

The dedication event is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 31 outside the Forbes Municipal Building.
