MARLBOROUGH – Marlborough residents who participated in the city’s Community Choice Power Supply Program have recently saved over $187,000 according to a recent press release.

That’s according to second-quarter data collected by Marlborough’s aggregate broker, Colonial Power Group, noted a press release from Mayor Arthur Vigeant’s office.

Municipal aggregation is a process where municipalities, like Marlborough, can purchase in bulk for the electrical load of customers to obtain a competitive supply of electricity, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities.

According to the press release, Marlborough estimates that approximately 5,000 customers using other energy suppliers outside of its aggregation program may be paying a higher rate this winter.

Marlborough’s rate through its energy supplier, Inspire Energy, is $0.09390 per kWh. The city said National Grid’s per kWh rate is about $0.15.

“As we get into the winter months, residents and businesses are really going to see significant savings on their electricity bills this year,” said Vigeant. “Although we’re about a nickel below National Grid’s rate, it will really add up.”
