SHREWSBURY – As Central Massachusetts is set to experience high temperatures over the next few days, Shrewsbury is offering resources to stay safe during this heat wave.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the area from 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 27, through 8 p.m. on Friday, July 28.

Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 92 degrees today and 91 tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service.

Shrewsbury has informed residents that they are welcome to cool off at Shrewsbury Public Library, located at 609 Main St. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on July 27, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 28.

In addition, Shrewsbury relayed information from the Central Massachusetts Regional Public Health Alliance on how to prevent heat-related illness:

  • Never leave people or pets unattended in a parked car.
  • Drink plenty of fluids (non-alcoholic), regardless of your activity level, to stay hydrated. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
  • If possible, stay in an air-conditioned space. Use fans as needed.
  • Open windows to allow fresh air to circulate when appropriate.
  • Dress in lightweight, loose-fitting clothes.
  • Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
  • During the hottest parts of the day, keep physical activities to a minimum and stay indoors in air conditioning and out of the sun. Limit outdoor activities to morning or evening hours.
  • Drink fruit juice or a sports beverage to replace salts and minerals lost during heavy sweating.
  • Use cool compresses, misting, showers, and baths to beat the heat.
  • Check on your friends, neighbors, and relatives.
