REGION – Happy Labor Day. Labor Day itself is a federal holiday, meaning schools, municipal, state and federal offices will be closed.

A lot of celebrations are going on in Marlborough this weekend. Here are some of the events:

Greek Festival

Get ready for the annual Greek Festival on Labor Day weekend at Sts. Anargyroi Church, 9 Central St. The festival will include Greek foods and pastries, live music and dancing, Greek souvenirs and marketplace, Greek dance performers and children’s activities.

Beer and wine will be available for purchase.

The fun began on Friday, Sept. 1, from 5 to 11 p.m., featuring a light menu. A full menu will be offered on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 2 and 3.

Admission is free; this will be a rain-or-shine event.

For information, call 508-485-2575 or visit www.stsanargyroi.org.

Mural Project

Mayor Arthur G. Vigeant invites residents to help beautify a public space on a busy thoroughfare. With the guidance of local muralist Melissa Stratton, residents can contribute to this project by meeting at Union Common on Sunday, Sept. 3, from noon to 2 p.m., to create paint squares that will ultimately make up the face of the mayor’s mural project.
All are welcome to participate, kids included. The mural will be located along a concrete wall across from the Dollar Tree at 75 S. Bolton St. (Route 85).

Please contact the mayor’s office at 508-460-3770 with any further questions.

Quaker City String Band Concert

The Quaker City String Band of Philadelphia will perform in Marlborough’s annual Labor Day Parade on Sept. 4.

The band will also hold a concert at the Whitcomb School Auditorium on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 4 p.m. The concert will include music from their winning Mummer’s Day performance and provide the opportunity to learn more about string bands and Mummery. The doors will open at 3:30 p.m.

Residents and community members are encouraged to bring canned goods and nonperishables to be donated to the Marlborough Community Cupboard to honor this year’s grand marshal, Director Barbara LaGrenade.

Labor Day Road Race

The Laborious Labor Day Road Race is set to take place Sept. 4 at Ghiloni Park in Marlborough. The event is sponsored by the Highland City Striders and benefits the Hudson Community Food Pantry. With no entry fee, runners are asked to bring 15 canned goods as a donation for the food pantry.

The race itself gives participants a choice between the “Tough Ten Mile” course and the “Fast Five” route in Marlborough and Hudson. Both events begin at 8 a.m., with the same start and finish line in Ghiloni Park.

Visit the Highland City Striders website (http://www.highlandcitystriders.org) for more information and to register. Race-day registration and food collection begin at 7 a.m. at Ghiloni Park.

Labor Day Parade

There will be an opening ceremony at 11:45 a.m. at Lincoln and Pleasant streets. The parade will step off at noon, proceeds west onto Lincoln Street, south onto Broad Street and east onto West Main Street. The parade will continue down Granger Boulevard and briefly turns onto Main Street. The parade will turn south onto Maple Street, ending at the intersection of Bolton Street (Route 85) and Maple Street. Due to ongoing construction, the parade will not go down Main Street.
