WESTBOROUGH – Hastings Elementary School will be getting a new roof.

The request – for $4,142,800 – passed by a two-thirds majority at Annual Town Meeting on Saturday, March 23.

“This is a very, very good price,” said Paul George, the town’s representative to the Assabet Valley School Committee.

With the approval, 80,000 square feet of the roof would be replaced with a multi-ply redundant assembly. The new roof would be under warranty for 40 years, with a life expectancy of up to 50 years with proper maintenance.

The roof became an issue in January, when heavy rain caused “serious failure” in several areas, according to Bock. The School Department was granted an emergency waiver by the Department of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) to expedite the replacement of the roof.

The roof is 27 years old; according to Bock, the roof’s seams and flashing have failed, among other problems.

“The roof has served us well, but it’s at its life’s end,” said Bock.

The project will take place during the summer.
