Region – The first official day of summer has brought extreme heat and humidity to the region.
The city of Marlborough has set up three cooling centers for residents searching for relief from the oppressive weather.? The centers are located at – Marlborough Police Station Lobby – 355 Bolton St.; Marlborough Council on Aging Auditorium – 250 Main St.; and the Marlborough Hospital- UMass -157 Union St. cafeteria until 7 p.m. and lobby until 8 p.m.
Southborough residents may go to the Senior Center, 9 Cordaville Rd. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (After 4 p.m. residents should call the Fire Department at 508-485-3235 to see if any other locations have been established as cooling centers.)
The town of Shrewsbury will use the Senior Center at 98 Maple Ave. as a cooling center through 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 21. ?For more information, visit www.shrewsbury-ma.gov/egov/docs/13402842007425.pdf.
Also, the town of Westborough has its Senior Center, located at 4 Rogers Rd., open as a cooling center Thursday, June 21. Contact the Board of Health at 508-366-3045 for more information.
Signs of heat-related illnesses include nausea, dizziness, flushed or pale skin, heavy sweating, and headaches. Victims of heat-related illness should be moved to a cool place, given cool water to drink and ice packs or cool wet cloths should be applied to the skin. If a victim refuses water, vomits or loses consciousness, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.
The commonwealth of Mass. website advises residents to dial 2-1-1 to find a local cooling center/shelter in their community if needed.
