Region – The Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) Tomahawks swim team finished in second place at the Midland-Wachusett League Invitational Championships. The Tomahawks scored 567 total points, behind Tyngsboro High School 640 points. The Westborough High School Rangers placed third with 547 points and the Shrewsbury High School Colonials came in seventh with 390 points.
ARHS had gone undefeated during the regular swim season, with an 11-0 record, their third consecutive year with a perfect record. The championships were held over two days, with the diving events held Jan. 29 at Greater Lowell Technical High School and the swimming events held Jan. 30 at Tantasqua Regional Senior High School in Fiskdale. The combined results of the league dual-meet schedule and the second-place finish at the championship meet makes Algonquin the overall Midland-Wachusett Swimming and Diving League Champions.
Westborough's Katie Priest won the girls” 500-yard freestyle (5:21.00) and the girls” 100-yard backstroke (1:02.03). Algonquin's Drew Beland won the boys” 200-yard freestyle (1:52.26) and the boys” 500-yard freestyle (4:56.66). Algonquin's Dorian McMenemy was also a double winner, taking first in both the girls” 100-yard freestyle (53.39) and the girls”
200-yard freestyle (1:56.49).
Other first place finishes included boys” 200-yard individual medley, Algonquin's Ethan McRae (2:17.25); boys” 100-yard backstroke, Algonquin's Jonathan Batista (56.01); and girls” 100-yard breaststroke, Shrewsbury's Samantha Du (1:09.97).
The Algonquin boys” 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:37.70) and Shrewsbury girls” 200-yard medley relay team (1:56.66) also had first place finishes.
